.P2P project without ICANN ?

As the web site says : P2P means "Peer-2-Peer" exchanged DNS data and is not about file sharing.

The project explained here wants to create a domain name extension without going through the ICANN procedure.

Empirical Evidence for the Role of the Domain Name Itself in Website Performance

Launching a Top Level Domain is a complex task.

"W" is a voiced labial-velar approximant symbol : an optional IDN specific requirement would an applicant choose to provide his applied-for generic Top-Level Domain string notated according to the International Phonetic Alphabet (http://www.langsci.ucl.ac.uk/ipa/IPA_chart_(C)2005.pdf).

Complex you said ?

Note you'd also better read english because all versions of the applicant guidebook, almost all communications and public comments are, and have been, published in english and until you are provided a version in your language, you will have to go through the understanding of this complex program in english.

The more I read the "proposed final new gTLD applicant guidebook", the more I think it is...

I-M-P-O-S-S-I-B-L-E

...to try the adventure of launching a community, a brand or any other TLD project on someone's own. Not only it requires a budget but another requirement is to understand the methodology to apply.

Filling in the ICANN's form alone would probably drive an application to be rejected.

And this is where I like to say : "chacun son métier". My knowledge is to decrypt the ICANN's applicant guidebook and explain interested parties the benefit they can have of developing their own domain name extension.

Having the budget is one thing but :
  • writing the rules of a project ;
  • filling in the ICANN form to apply ;
  • reporting to ICANN ;
  • connecting to partners ;
  • contracting with partners ;
  • collecting letters of endorsement ;
  • pricing domain names ;
  • building a technical platform ;
  • providing full description of a registry service provider (IDNs, EPP, DNSSEC, Escrow...) ;
  • imagining THE business model in a strong business plan ;
  • demonstrate you have enough funds ;
  • scoring and passing all tests...
...requires the specific knowledge of a team of experts.

Get rid of the .COM in front of a .AU

A interesting change could happen soon with .AU domain names. The .AU registry invites the public to comment its policies. In a document entitled "REVIEW OF .AU POLICY FRAMEWORK", issues are raised and one attracted my attention because this is where a registry gets an opportunity to earn a lot of money "1H: Direct registrations under .au".

Vertical Integration (VI) and domainers

A very good article from Kevin Murphy which I cannot comment unfortunately.

- Il ne sera plus obligatoire de passer par un registrar pour acheter un nom de domaine. Par exemple, il sera possible d'acheter un nom de domaine du vin (ex : chateaulatour.wine) directement auprès du registre, le propriétaire de l'extension Internet ;
- Le prix d'achat pourrait être le plus bas du marché si le registre souhaite vendre des noms de domaine directement aux intéressés ;
Cela a d'ailleurs plusieurs avantages :
  • Les registrars s'accréditent auprès du registre et engagent des fonds en amont ;

No Applicant GuideBook (AGB) this morning (DAGv5) but...

... new gTLD registrars and registries will compete for the benefit of the consumer !

The ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 codes is a list of three letters country codes which applicant guidebook prohibits the use for new Top-Level Domains projects.

4 known Top Level Domains projects are listed on ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 :
  1. .VEN for the Venetian community : http://veneto.org ;
  2. .AND for Andalusia : http://puntoand.blogspot.com ;
  3. .FRA for France : http://a-fra.org ;
  4. .CYM for the Welsh cultural and linguistic community : http://www.dotcym.org.

.WALES or .CWL for the Welsh community ?

.CYM is listed in ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 list and is reserved for the Cayman Islands.

For his reason dotCYM, applying at ICANN to represent the Welsh cultural and linguistic community, would like to hear users' opinion for a new choice of string : .cymru, .cwl (Cymru Wales) or .wales ?

Explain your choice here

.FREE pre-registrations are open

Pre-registering requires to check if the desired domain name is available, then an account should be created.

Once verification is done and account activated (you will receive a code in your email for this), you will be able to manage your domain name. Note : your domain name is not registered at this time.

Another option is offered to become a "Very Important Person" and pre-register up to 50 .free domain names at no cost.
